Group Lists Most Pressing Texas Transportation Problems

AUSTIN (January 17, 2013)?The national non-profit group TRIP released a report Thursday that has identifies the top 100 road and bridge problems in Texas and warns that more spending is needed as the population and economy grows.

The advocacy organization identified 11 major bridges that need repair, 11 major highway segments that need safety improvements and 38 road segments that suffer from unacceptable congestion.

Most of the problems are in major metropolitan areas, particularly Dallas and San Antonio.

The group predicts the number of vehicle miles traveled in the state will increase 35 percent by 2030.

Poor roads and congestion increase transportation costs and hurt the state's economy, so TRIP is calling on lawmakers to spend more on Texas highways.

Road maintenance spending in Texas has dropped 50 percent in the past decade.
