Man sets himself alight at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci airport

The man, believed to be from the Ivory Coast and aged 18, was due to be deported from Italy.

The incident happened in a customs police office in Terminal 3 of Leonardo da Vinci airport at Fiumicino, on the outskirts of the capital.

Police said the man poured a canister of fuel over himself and ignited it with a lighter.

His apparent protest against being deported forced the closure of an Alitalia check-in area.

He was taken to Rome's Sant 'Eugenio hospital with serious burns, while a policeman who put out the flames with a fire extinguisher was also treated for burns to his right arm.

The incident caused alarm among passengers and part of the terminal was closed off but reopened a few hours later.

The immigrant, who has not been named, had recently received a deportation notice ordering him to report to police at the airport.
